2009 in review…

As we look back on the 2009 NCAA football season one thing stands out compared to the last two years, stability. There was much less volatility at the top of the BCS standings this season. Other than disappointing seasons at Oklahoma (7-5) and USC (8-4) there was not much drama in the top 5 over the course of the season. Remember 2007 when the #1 ranking was passed around like a hot potato and the national champion was a 2 loss LSU squad? Most seasons fans and media wonder if anyone will be playing for the title without a loss. This season saw relatively few upsets and 6 teams… Alabama, Texas, Florida, Boise St, TCU and Cincinnati all finished the season undefeated. Quite a new problem for the BCS!

Some of the top storylines for 2009 were…

1.       USC’s 7 year reign on the Pac 10 finally came to an end and so did the Pete Carroll era. With the Trojans losing 4 games, the most since Pete’s first season, the door opened for an Oregon team that was left for dead on the blue turf of Boise St, to win the “Civil War” against Oregon St and go to the Rose Bowl. With USC breaking in a new coach and the emergence of teams like Washington and Stanford, the Pac 10 will be fun to watch.

2.       Oklahoma’s dream of winning it all came crashing down early when the team and Heisman winning QB Sam Bradford were knocked out by BYU in week #1. HC Bob Stoops did a fantastic job keeping the team focused through a rash of injuries and finished 7-5 with a big win over Stanford in the Sun Bowl.

3.       In this article last year we mentioned to keep an eye on BCS busting teams such as Boise St, BYU and Utah. If you throw in TCU these teams finished 2009 a combined 46-6 with BYU (12) and Utah (18) finishing in the top 20 and Boise St (4) and TCU (6) in the top 10. They all won their bowl games except TCU who played Boise St. Don’t look for BCS teams to be lining up to schedule these guys anytime soon…just ask Oklahoma (lost to BYU 13-14), Oregon (lost to Boise St 8-19), and Clemson (lost to TCU 10-14).

4.       The SEC continues to set the standard. With Alabama defeating Texas in the title game, the SEC claimed its fourth consecutive championship. The number of elite coaches, depth of NFL talent and fanatical fan bases continue to buoy this conference above others.

5.       As 2009 came to an end many high profile coaching vacancies became open. Charlie Weis couldn’t overcome 2 losses to Navy, 0 victories vs. USC and two straight November collapses. Mark Mangino (Kansas), Mike  Leetch (Texas Tech) and Jim Leavitt (South Florida) were all fired amid allegations of mistreatment of players. Pete Carroll is returning to the NFL. Urban Meyer's status is anything but certain and  Bobby Bowden is retiring after 33 seasons at Florida St. and posting an overall 373-119-4 record. That leaves vacancies at Notre Dame, USC, Florida St and possibly Florida...all in the same year! How their replacements perform in their place will have an enormous impact on the 2010 season.

As the clock ticked down and Alabama raised their trophy in triumph, all of us at JEM Football Service began to look forward to August for what is sure to be an exciting 2010.
